Love Is in the Air

Jaylen Barron talks about Free Rein and its new Valentine’s Day special.

Melissa Byers

With Valentine's Day coming up, love is in the air.

For Jaylen Barron, that love extends to her castmates and one very special horse.

Barron stars in Netflix's Free Rein in the lead role of Zoe, a girl from Los Angeles who spends the summer at her mom's childhood home on an island off the coast of England. After befriending a mysterious horse during a summer, she finds the strength to deal with issues she faces.

The show, which has wrapped production on its third season, due out later this year, has a special coming up for Valentine's Day. Free Rein: Valentine's Day drops on Netflix on February 1.

We caught up with Barron for a Q & A about the show and the special episode.

Did you have experience with horses before you started the series?

No, I didn't have any experience with horses other than riding on a pony in a carnival.

How much training did you need to have for the role?

We have some of the best horse trainers on hand, so before I left to the U.K. for filming, they sent me for riding lessons. In between scenes and before filming started we would train onsite as well.

How do you like shooting in England? Is it different from working in the U.S.?

It's very green and beautiful but so cold in comparison to L.A.! I do have a special place in my heart for it now that I'm not in the elements.

Have you had any interesting interactions with fans of the show?

The most interesting aspect of my fans is when they make edits of pictures and videos of me. I watch and think how much time they took and what talent it takes to do that. I have no patience with things like that so I appreciate it so much.

What makes the Valentine's Day episode special?

It's about all the girl power! I love that it showcases the friendships between the pony squad girls and that we get to learn more about the island.

How does the cast get along?

Luckily, we all work great together. We've made friendships both on and off screen. We go have lunch together and get together over weekends … it makes for a positive work place.

How did you get the role?

I auditioned but I wasn't going to go because it called for a different type than myself and I had plans to go on vacation! My manager convinced me to go, so I went in and the rest is Free Rein!

What are your plans for the future?

My plans for the future are to open up an animal sanctuary but before I can do that I need to become a household name, so I'm always looking for my next job.
