Me and My Emmy: Ashley Nicole Black

The comedy writer discusses her excitement over being nominated in the same category for two different shows.

Emmy Tally: Two

How She Got the Gold: For outstanding writing for a variety special, for TBS's Full Frontal with Samantha Bee Presents Not the White House Correspondents' Dinner, in 2017, and for producing AppleTV+'s winner for outstanding comedy series, Ted Lasso, in 2022.

Now for the Noms: Black has been nominated as a writer eight times. In 2021, she was nominated in the same category for two different shows.

On a Pedestal: "My best friend came over and yelled at me when she found my Emmy on the floor! She then had a white Grecian column shipped to my house on which to properly acknowledge my accomplishment. Does it match my decor? No. However, if I complain, she'll send some museum lighting to add to the display. So my Emmy reminds me to celebrate myself at least as much as my best friend does."

Double Noms: "I was the kid who grew up practicing my Emmy speech in the shower, but I never dreamed I'd be lucky enough to work on two incredible, Black-woman-led, comedy variety shows in the same season — A Black Lady Sketch Show and The Amber Ruffin Show — and be nominated for both."

Feel the Love: "My godfather, DJ Rogers, was an amazing R&B and gospel singer, and I looked up to him. When I was little, he told me, 'Some people are not going to like a loud, smart girl. But I want you to remember that I love it.' And through the ups and downs of my career, I've remembered to stay true to myself: loud, smart, and grateful to be fiercely loved."
