Elba portrayed South African president/segregation freedom fighter Nelson Mandela in Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.

He starred as Janek in Prometheus with Charlize Theron and appeared alongside Natalie Portman and Anthony Hopkins in Thor the role of Heimdall.

He has also starred in other such features as Daddy’s Little Girls, Obsessed and 28 Weeks Later.

Television fans also recognize him from his work as "Charles Miner," alongside Steve Carell, on NBC comedy The Office and his performance as Russell "Stringer" Bell on The Wire.

He has been nominated four times for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Miniseries or Television Film, winning one, and was nominated six times for a Primetime Emmy Award, including a nomination in 2016.
