Edward Herrmann was perhaps best known for portraying Franklin Delano Roosevelt in three television movies, and for the role of Connecticut patriarch Richard Gilmore on Gilmore Girls.
Hermann, who was born in Washington, D.C., in 1943, also voiced many documentaries, particularly on the History Channel, and guest starred in numerous series, including M*A*S*H, St. Elsewhere, Homicide: Life on the Street, Oz, Grey's Anatomy, Law & Order, Harry's Law and The Good Wife. He won a Primetime Emmy Award in 1999 for a guest-starring role in The Practice.

Herrmann also had a long and distinguished career on film and on stage, winning a Tony award in 1976 for his supporting role in Mrs. Warren's Profession. His feature film credits included The Great Gatsby, Reds, Annie (again as FDR), The Lost Boys, Nixon, The Aviator and The Wolf of Wall Street.
Herrmann died December 31, 2014. He was 71.
