About

David Winters was an English-American actor, dancer, choreographer, and producer.

He began acting and dancing on television at the age of 12. By the age of 14 he had worked with Jackie Gleason, Martha Raye, Wally Cox, George Jessel, Paul Douglas, and Perry Como.

In the late 1950s, Winters began working extensively in musicals, including the original Broadway productions of Gypsy and West Side Story, also appearing in the film version of the latter.

His acting work includes appearances on episodes of Mister Peepers, Naked City, 77 Sunset Strip, Perry Mason, Burke’s Law, and the anthology shows Studio One in Hollywood, The Plymouth Playhouse, Lux Video Theatre, and The United States Steel Hour.

As a choreographer, one of Winters’s most notable works was the film Viva Las Vegas, starring Elvis Presley and Ann-Margret. He also worked as choreographer on the musical/variety television shows Shindig!, Hullabaloo, The Hollywood Palace, and The Ed Sullivan Show. Winters went on to produce and/or choreograph television specials for Lucille Ball, Steve Allen, Nancy Sinatra, Ann-Margret, Raquel Welch, Alice Cooper, Donny and Marie, Diana Ross, Bobby Darin, Sonny & Cher, and The 5th Dimension, among many others.

In June 2018, Winters released his memoir Tough Guys Do Dance, about his time spent working in the film industry.

Winters died April 23, 2019, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He was 80.
