Al Gordon Primetime Emmy Winner Who Wrote for Jack Benny, Carol Burnett and More

Gordon wrote for Benny's show as well as dozens of others over the years.

Al Gordon, a Primetime Emmy-winning writer best known for a long association with Jack Benny, died May 23, 2012, in Los Angeles. He was 89.

A fast and funny writer whose collaborations with partner Hal Goldman helped Benny to successfully navigate the transition from radio to television, Gordon was one of the most prolific and reliable joke writers in the business.

His other credits included Get Smart, The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, The Flip Wilson Show, The Carol Burnett Show, Barbara Mandrell and the Mandrell Sisters, Tony Orlando and Dawn, That’s My Mama, Carter Country, Three’s Company, 227 and many others.

In all, he won three Primetime Emmys — two for The Jack Benny Program and one for the variety special An Evening with Carol Channing.
