The Wire, 30 Rock Top WGA Awards

Possible Strike End Lifts Spirits at
Scaled-Down New York Reception

New York, NY – This week's potential strike lift gave television and film writers much more to celebrate at the Writers Guild of America Awards in New York. Though the guild's west coast division had canceled its awards ceremony, due to the now four-month long strike, its east coast counterpart opted for a scaled-back, red carpet-less cocktail gathering Saturday.

Shortly after the their board announced its endorsement of the guild's new, tentative contract this weekend, WGA East members packed into the Hudson Theatre and put picket signs down to applaud a diverse roster of productions.

Best-written drama honors went to HBO's The Wire. NBC's 30 Rock writing team took home best-written comedy. Writers of The Sopranos won for best episodic drama, while NBC surfaced again with a nod to The Office for best episodic comedy series.

Popular Comedy Central program The Colbert Report won the best comedy/variety series. The animation writers award went to the team behind The Simpsons. In daytime, CBS staple The Young & the Restless won best serial and NBC’s Days of our Lives garnered the best on-air promotion award.

Hallmark Channel and TNT were honored in the long-form awards areas, Pandemic best long-form original and The Company: A Story of the CIA for best long-form adaptation respectively.

PBS garnered two best documentary honors, one on the "current events" sid for Frontline's Return of the Taliban and the second for "other than current events" for Billy Strayhorn: Lush Life.

ABC took best regularly scheduled, bulletin and breaking news for World News with Charles Gibson’s coverage of the Amish school shooting. The net also received an honor for best analysis, feature or commentary for Good Morning America segment ""To Bee or Not to Bee."
