How to Apply

Scholarships are project-based and MAY NOT be used for tuition.

Who May Apply?

The Mister Rogers Memorial Scholarship is open ONLY to rising seniors, graduating seniors (must be continuing directly to graduate school) and graduate students (Masters or Ph.D.) of accredited colleges or universities within the United States. Applicants must demonstrate a commitment – through coursework or experience – to any combination of at least two of the following fields:

  • early childhood education
  • child development/child psychology
  • film/television production
  • music
  • animation
  • production of cross-platform entertainment

Applicant must have the ultimate goal of working in children's media.

Applicants may apply for support in one of the two following areas:

  • Research on the relationship between children's use of media and learning or children's use of media and personal growth.
  • Development of program concepts or extended development of creative elements of an existing concept, e.g. design of puppets, scripts, storyboards, characters, music, etc. May also be used to finalize or launch the production of an existing concept.

Requirements:

  • Entrants must fill out an application form online and submit a proposed detailed plan (including project goals/milestones) and budget of how the scholarship funds will be used. It is also required that you submit a video of yourself explaining your project.
  • Two letters of recommendation are required - either from faculty members from two of the referenced fields and/or professionals from the children's media industry with whom you have worked.
  • Recipients must be enrolled during the period in which the scholarship is awarded and the semester following when the funds are disbursed. All scholarships will be awarded through the applicable student's financial aid office or registrar.
  • For students on a semester calendar, half of the award will be disbursed at the beginning of the semester following the granting of the award, and the second half at the beginning of the second semester.
  • Students on the quarter system will receive their disbursements in three payments.

How Are Applicants Selected?

Applications are evaluated by a committee formed yearly by the two governors representing the Television Academy's Children's Programming Peer Group.
