Bob Smith was an American comedian and author.

Smith was the first openly gay comedian to appear on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and the first openly gay comedian to have his own HBO half-hour comedy special.

Smith also performed at Montreal's Just for Laughs Festival several times and headlined gay pride parades in the U.S. and in Canada.

As a television writer, Smith wrote for The MTV Video Music Awards, Dennis Miller, Roseanne and MADtv.

Smith died January 20, 2018, in New York City, New York. He was 59.
